Alphonse Gabriel Capone

Biographical info

My Anti-hero is Alphonse Gabriel Capone also known as “Scarface”.

Capone was born in New York City on Tuesday January 17th 1899, he was of Italian heritage. His parents and his eight siblings immigrated to the States in 1894. Al Capone died at the age of 48 in 1947 due to brain damage.

Career

Al Capone was an infamous gangster. He was only a teenager when he joined his first gang, which was a street gang. In about 1920 Capone started working for Torrio and his gang. He grew to be Torrio’s right-hand man. And when Torrio retired in 1925, Capone became the new boss of the gang. With political and law-enforcement protection, it was possible to use more violence to earn more money. For example when a liquor store refused to pay, they would blow up their store with no mercy. In the mean time he was also donating money to charities and he even sponsored a soup kitchen during the depression in Chicago. A couple of years later the FBI got involved and Al Capone was jailed for 9 months. Later in 1931 Capone was sentenced for 11 years in prison and a $270.000 fine of unpaid taxes. He served his sentence at Alcatraz. He was released in 1939 after only 7 years. After that he retired and went to his home in Florida, where he spend his last days.

And later when he got caught he was send to the Alcatraz jail. Alcatraz had just opened and was almost impossible to escape from because it was based on an island.

Al Capone received a lot of criticism because he was terrorising the neighbourhood. A lot of people hated him but were also afraid.

Impact

Capone and his gang made a lot of impact on the city of Chicago, by threatening and killing people. It also showed that the law-enforcement was corrupt.
